VA Healthcare System adding COVID evaluation tent

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — In the wake of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases due to the omicron variant, VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System reports it is taking steps to ensure the proper allocation of manpower and resources.

Officials have announced that the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center is opening a COVID assessment tent on January 10. This will help reduce the stress on the emergency room caused by the increase in COVID-related visits.

These veterans should report to the COVID tent first before going to the emergency department. The tent is located in the southeast corner, accessible via Shelley Berkley Way. Hours are from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

The nursing staff will determine the severity of each patient’s symptoms upon arrival. Visitors with mild symptoms will not be tested due to the limited resources available. However, they will be instructed to quarantine at their home and given information about serious infections. They will also be asked to return after a time if symptoms persist.

Veterans with severe symptoms of COVID will need to be screened and admitted if necessary. The VASNHS will not screen individuals for COVID-19 symptoms at this time.

VASNHS is also changing the visitation policy to reduce risk from increased traffic at VAMC.

Inpatient visitors and the emergency department will be allowed into the facility. However, one visitor per patient is allowed. The visitor must stay in the patient’s assigned room during the visit. The visiting hours for inpatient units are from 8-10 a.m. to 4-6 p.m.

Veterans who require assistance with their outpatient visits may have one caregiver accompany them. Visitors are not allowed to visit the LVR3 or inpatient Mental Health.

VASNHS offers virtual care to many face-to-face appointments in order to reduce exposure for patients and staff.

VASNHS staff are working to reach scheduled patients to offer virtual appointments.
