On Oct. 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in the eighth round of a 15-round bout in Kinshasa, Zaire (zah-EER’), known as the “Rumble in the Jungle,”to regain his title as world heavyweight champion.
Six days before Election Day in 1912, Vice President James S. Sherman, who was running for a second term with President William Howard Taft died. (Sherman was succeeded by Nicholas Murray Butler, but Taft the Republican candidate lost in an Electoral College landslide defeat to Democrat Woodrow Wilson.
The silent film was first made in 1921. “The Sheik,”Rudolph Valentino stars, premiering in Los Angeles.
The radio was first used in 1938. “The War of the Worlds,”Orson Welles starred in the episode, which aired on CBS.
In 1945, the U.S. government announced that shoe rationing would be ended at midnight.
1961 was the year that the Soviet Union tried a hydrogen bomb. “Tsar Bomba,”With a force of approximately 50 megatons. The Soviet Party Congress unanimously approved a resolution ordering the removal of Josef Stalin’s body from Lenin’s tomb.
In 1972, 45 people were killed when an Illinois Central Gulf commuter train was struck from behind by another train on Chicago’s South Side.

Five years ago: The third powerful earthquake to hit Italy in two months spared human life but struck at the nation’s cultural identity, destroying a Benedictine cathedral, a medieval tower and other beloved landmarks.
One year ago: Walmart stated that it had removed ammunitions and firearms from U.S. store displays because of the incident. “civil unrest”The retailer stated that the items were being restored to display in certain areas of the country because of unrest. “Full House”Lori Loughlin, the actor, reported to a federal prison in California in order to begin a two month sentence for her involvement in the college admissions corruption scandal. A Connecticut prosecutor said that Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel would be not be tried in the 1975 killing Martha Moxley. He had already spent more than 11 year in prison before being released in 2013.
