Super Typhoon Karding: Philippines on red alert as Noru nears

As Super Typhoon Noru draws near, the Philippines has issued an emergency alert.

After suddenly intensifying, the storm, locally known as Super Typhoon Karding in the Philippines, became super typhoon status.

“The highest emergency preparedness and response protocol has been activated in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and the Bicol region,”The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

It reminded the public to be cautious as strong winds are likely to hit within the next 24 hours.

The typhoon is likely to make landfall in Quezon’s northern part or Aurora’s southern part in the evening, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, who broadcast a live hourly television bulletin.

It stated that it did not rule out a earlier landfall in Polillo Islands in afternoon.

Due to the approaching storm, schools in several cities, including Aurora and Muntinlupa City, were forced to suspend classes Monday September 26.

CNN Weather says that Noru now has winds equivalent to a Category 5 US hurricane.

It is expected that it will bring large waves, storm surge, torrential rainfalls, and winds in excess 200 kph (124 km/h) to Luzon in the next 24 hours.

PAGASA issued a warning to the Polillo Islands in preparation of the storm’s potential for extensive damage.

The warning comes after the storm intensified quickly in the early hours on Sunday.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, it had grown from a 140 kmh (85 mph), typhoon to an 250 kph (175 mph) super-typhoon in six hours.

The PAGASA had earlier issued a signal warning level 4 for the Polillo Islands, in anticipation of significant damage. Level two and three warnings were issued for most of Luzon, including Metro Manila.

This is an ongoing story. There will be more to come.
