SETTING THE STAGE
Morgan State (4-7) will continue non-conference action when they host the Goucher Gophers (3-8) on Wednesday, January 5. The Bears have been idle since December 18 when they fell to Mount Saint Mary’s. Goucher (3-8) was slated to face another Division I opponent in an exhibition, Loyola University Maryland, earlier this season but that game was ultimately canceled. Goucher’s game against Morgan will also be recorded as an exhibition game for the Gophers. The game will be streamed on morganstatebears.com and broadcast by HSRN.com. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.

THE SERIES
Wednesday’s contest will mark the first meeting between the schools.

SCOUTING THE GOPHERS
Goucher enters Wednesday’s contest coming off an 80-70 loss to Johnson and Wales (R.I.) University in the consolation round of Albright’s Double Tree Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30. Cam Isaacs paced four Gophers in double figures with 20 points while also recording five rebounds and three assists. Ryan Conde finished with 13 points while adding seven assists, seven rebounds and five steals. Goucher shot 40.9% from the floor, went 9-15 at the stripe and were 7-24 behind the arc.
• Goucher, a member of the Landmark Conference (CAA) and NCAA Division III, begins the seventh season under Tom Rose … Rose, a Goucher alum, previously served as boys basketball head coach at Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Middle River, Md. from 2002-2015 … He guided Lady of Mount Carmel to the MIAA postseason in 10 of his 13 seasons and reached the conference championship game five times.

• The Gophers did not compete at all during the 2020-21 season … Goucher finished the 2019-20 season with a 6-19 regular season record and went 3-11 in conference action.
• The Gophers are currently 3-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
• Senior 5-10 guard Cam Isaacs (Randallstown, Md.) leads the Gophers averaging 13.7 ppg and is shooting 38.6 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point territory. Junior 6-3 guard Josh Lichti is averaging 9.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg and is shooting 46.7 percent from the floor, followed by 6-4 freshman John Dixon (Towson, Md.) with 8.0 ppg, and junior 6-5 guard Octavius Johnson is chipping in 6.0 ppg and is shooting 47.1 percent from the field. 
• The Gophers are averaging 57.5 points per game, while holding its opponents to 56.0 points.
• Goucher is shooting 38.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from beyond the arc.


OFFENSIVE OUTPUT
• The Bears are currently averaging 74.4 points (No. 2 in MEAC) thru 11 games.
• Morgan exploded for 118 points in its 2021-22 season opener versus St. Mary’s College of Maryland and followed it up with a 126-71 win against Penn State Allegheny.
• The Bears are shooting 43.4 percent from the field (ranked No. 4) and 28.0 percent from beyond the arc (No. 8).
• Morgan led the MEAC in scoring by averaging 79.8 points thru 22 games of the 2020-21 season.
• They scored a season-high 102 in a home win vs. Lincoln-Pa. (Dec. 1, 2020).
• MSU also led the MEAC in offensive rebounding (39.7 avg).

TURNOVER MARGIN
Through games played on Sunday, Dec. 19, Morgan ranked No. 8 in the nation in turnover margin (6.6 ratio, with 164 turnovers and 237 opponent turnovers).
• Sherwyn Devonish has registered 38 assists and 14 turnovers and currently ranks No. 43 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio.  

BEAR D 
Morgan has started off the 2021-22 campaign by allowing opponents to 75.1 points per game (rank No. 6 in MEAC) and 44.8 percent shooting from the field (No. 8).
• MSU’s opponents have shot at a 39.8 percent clip on average from beyond the arc … this ranks last in the conference.
• The 21.5 turnovers per game Morgan’s defense forces ranks No. 2 in the country … MSU’s 10.5 steals per game ranks T-No. 34 in the nation.

THE CHARITY STRIPE
The Bears’ returning team includes six players who shot 70 percent or better from the free throw line last season.
• Morgan has converted 64.7 percent (145-224; ranks No. 7 in MEAC) from the stripe thru 11  games.
• Lagio Grantsaan is currently shooting 66.7 percent (28-42; No. 10 in MEAC) from the stripe to lead the Bears.
• Last season, Morgan shot 73.9 percent (369-499; ranked No. 1 in MEAC) from the stripe, led by De’Torrion Ware who shot 83.2 percent (84-101; ranked No. 5) and Malik Miller 71.6 percent (58-81; ranked No. 10).
