Kansas City Chiefs reach 1-year deal with RB Ronald Jones II

KANSAS CITY (Mo. Sources told ESPN that Ronald Jones II, a free-agent running back, has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Kansas City Chiefs. This confirms multiple reports.

Clyde Edwards Helaire, the only player who has proven his worth at the position, was the Chiefs’ need for running back. Their top rusher in 2021 is Darrel Williams and their top playoff rusher last season is Jerick McKinnon. They are unrestricted, free agents.

Jones, 24, was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-round pick in 2018. In four seasons with the Bucs, Jones started 25 games. He led the team’s rushing yards in 2019 (724) and 2020 (996). He also caught 76 passes over the four seasons, with a personal best of 31 in 2019.

  • He lost favor with his coaches when the Bucs signed Leonard Fournette for the 2020 season. Jones was a starter in three games last year and had 428 rushing yards. He also had 10 receptions.

Jones is the latest addition of a talented Chiefs offense, which is currently retooling. Kansas City traded wide receiver Tyreek Hills to the Miami Dolphins. Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle, who both played a significant part last season, were also traded. The team has replaced them with free-agent wideouts JuJu Schuster and Marquez Vades-Scantling.
