Sam Mills joined the Saints about a week into training camp leading up to the 1986 season, and head coach Jim Mora’s first reaction to seeing the middle linebacker step on an NFL practice field was probably what everyone thought when they first saw Mills.
“I’m thinking, ‘Oh crap!’”Mora is presenting Mills posthumously in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday in Canton Ohio.

Art McNally was a former official and is now the Hall of Famer. He never wanted fame.
Art McNally was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame because he rejected fame. McNally keeps a ledger in his Philadelphia-area home of every game he officiated in any sport — 3,145 total. The goal was to complete the 3,145 games without anyone remembering that he was there.
McNally, who is 97, will become history as the first on-field official inducted into the Hall of Fame. His induction, however, has more to do his overall body of work and less with his time on the pitch. While officiating is an integral part of football it can be difficult for officials to prove their worth or qualify for Hall consideration. A player has statistics. A coach has a record. A coach has a record. An owner has organizational accomplishments. McNally’s entry is based on the reputation he earned through decades in the league. McNally was informed that he was a finalist when he received a call. “integrity”That was the phrase that was repeated during his candidacy.

What does Josh Jacobs’ surprising appearance reveal about his role?
Josh Jacobs was the running back in the first two series. Because of injury fear, lead backs rarely play in preseason games. Jacobs may not be playing as a lead back as much as people think. He played only the first quarter, but he was still active. It probably shouldn’t be shocking considering the Raiders drafted rookie Zamir White in the fourth round and declined Jacobs’ fifth-year option earlier this offseason.
