Houston is finally home to a legal weed dispensary, but don’t get too excited just yet — it’s reserved for those with medical prescriptions, which can only be given to individuals with specific ailments. Who can get a prescription for marijuana?
Texas Original, a chain that offers medical marijuana dispensaries in Texas, opened at 1714 Houston Ave. on Tuesday. Last year, there were discussions in Texas about adding chronic pain sufferers to the list. But the measure was rejected. The law does not allow prescriptions for low-THC cannabis. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. The state currently allows only weed products that contain less than 1 percent THC.
Texas requires that a specialist confirm a diagnosis. Your primary care doctor won’t likely fill the prescription. A second doctor must also confirm the diagnosis of the first specialist. Both must be registered in Texas’ Compassionate Use Registry.
