Jollibee, the Filipino fast-food chain, will open its first Michigan restaurant in Sterling Heights.
According to Luke Bonner who is a senior economic advisor for Sterling Heights, the restaurant will open at the former Denny’s on Hall Road in front Lakeside Mall.
Bonner announced plans for the restaurant at a Sterling Heights City Council meeting on August. This was part of a presentation of economic developments in the city over the next one to two years. The plans were also reported by the Sterling Heights SentryLater Crain’s Detroit Business.
“This will have fans coming from all over the place to eat here,” Bonner Participants at the meeting. “I’m guessing that the line will be significantly long when that finally opens.”
Jollibee was started in 1978 in Philippines and now has more than 5,800 restaurants. About 50 are located in the U.S.
The company is currently experiencing rapid expansion across the nation, with new restaurants opening in Florida, Maryland and California in recent weeks. The Sterling Heights restaurant is the company’s first in Michigan.
Jollibee is known for its take on fried chicken, spaghetti with a sweet sauce and slices of ham and hot dog, and its peach mango pie.
Bonner likened Jollibee’s popularity to that of the Chicago-style hot dog chain Portillo’s, Which opened near iLocated in the busy Hall Road/M59 area of March.
The 2,500-square-foot Jollibee will be built at the site of the former Denny’s restaurant (which will be torn down), and will feature a drive-thru with dual lanes and outdoor patio seating,Crain’s obtained documents from Sterling Heights planning commission documents.
Bonner and a city spokesperson did not respond to calls and emails. Jollibee spokesperson also did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
