York was presumptive favourite to win the kicking job. However, it was expected the Browns would keep McLaughlin around so that there was at least some kicking competition.

Blewitt joined Cleveland’s practice squad last season just before Week 17 after playing in two games with Washington. He converted only two of five field goals and both extra-point attempts with Washington. But he did not appear in a Browns match.

McLaughlin was a Browns player in 16 games last season. He converted 15-of-21 field-goal attempts, including a four-of-4 on kicks beyond 50 yards and 36-of 37 extra points.

He started the season well, converting all 18 extra points and 11 of 12 field goals during the first eight games. The second half of his year was not as smooth as it was. He made just four-of-9 field goals and hit on 18-of-19 additional points. McLaughlin had a particularly difficult time with kicks between 39 and 49 yards. He made only four field goals on ten attempts.
