Almost 3 years since 1st dispensary opens, 76,000 pounds of medical marijuana purchased

A recent report sheds light into the development of the industry as Arkansas approaches the third anniversary since the opening of its first medical marijuana dispensary.

The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration’s most recent report includes many milestones.

* Overall, patients have purchased more than 76,000 pounds of cannabis since the first dispensary opened in May 2019.

* Local dispensary Plant Family Therapeutics of Mountain Home, despite opening just two years ago, has emerged as a consistently top seller. It sold 2,596 pounds, ranking it fourth in sales in the state for 2021. The local dispensary was sixth in sales for January with 199 pounds.

* For the month of January, medical marijuana patients spent $20.53 million at the state’s 37 dispensaries to obtain 3,731 pounds of cannabis;

* With state tax collection of $2.84 million in January, overall tax collection from the medical marijuana industry has surpassed $60 million. Since mid-2019, $60.19 million has already been collected. This includes both the 6.5% regular state sales tax and 4.0% privilege tax. Both taxes apply to every patient purchase. Only the 4.0% tax is applicable to sales from cultivators and dispensaries.

* The Arkansas Department of Health reports 82,696 active Medical Marijuana Registry Identification Cards. These cards allow patients to legally purchase a small amount of cannabis.
