The big waves in free agency are over. The draft is over. All eyes are now on the upcoming NFL Season. Few teams had a more busy offseason than the Steelers. They acquired Mitchell Trubisky in free agency and used the 20th pick in the draft to select Kenny Pickett. Mason Rudolph will be Ben Roethlisberger’s successor.
Pittsburgh’s roster includes some of the league’s most talented players. T.J. Watt, All Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward, and Minkah Fitzpatrick, two-time All Pro safety, are Pittsburgh’s leaders on defense. Running back Najee, receivers Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson, as well tight end Pat Freiermuth are the Steelers’ offensive. The Steelers, led by Mike Tomlin as coach, will be trying to win the franchise’s seventh Vince Lombardi Trophy. This is also the first since 2008.
They’ll first have to get past their 2022 opponents. Below is a complete listing of the teams scheduled to face off with Pittsburgh this season, as well as a rundown their 18-week regular season schedule (once announced).
Baltimore Ravens: Pittsburgh won four consecutive games against its archrival. The Ravens were plagued by injuries last season and started 8-3 before losing six of their final six games. After trading Marquise brown to the Cardinals, Ravens made waves in draft. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore’s starting quarterback, was surprised by the move.
Cincinnati Bengals: Last season, the Steelers were swept in a sweep by the reigning AFC champions. After winning 10 straight against their divisional foe, Pittsburgh has lost three straight to Cincinnati. Steelers had problems last season with Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow completed nearly 81% in Cincinnati’s two victories over Pittsburgh.
Cleveland Browns – Pittsburgh swept their longtime division rival, the Cleveland Browns, in 2021 to avenge their 2020 playoff defeat to Cleveland. Roethlisberger had a 26-3-1 career record against Cleveland and this was his last home game. After a disappointing 8-9 season, the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in this offseason.
New England Patriots: This matchup marks Pittsburgh’s first game against the Patriots since 2008, when Tom Brady was not there. That’s good news for the Steelers, who went 3-12 against Brady during his 20-year Patriots career. Mac Jones, second-year quarterback, was Brady’s replacement and helped the Patriots win a playoff spot in his first season.
New Orleans Saints – New Orleans is a very different team from the one Steelers lost to in the 2018 season. Dennis Allen has replaced Sean Payton as the team’s head coach. Drew Brees has been replaced by Jameis Winston as New Orleans’ starting quarterback. Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, and Cameron Jordan, the Saints’ running back, are still available. New Orleans was eliminated from the playoffs in 2021 despite a 9-8 record.
New York Jets – The Jets have made significant personnel changes this offseason. New York is expected start several members of its highly-touted rookie class, which includes receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Ahmad Gardner, defensive line Jermaine Johnson II, running back Breece Hill, and defensive end Jermaine Jones II. New York’s roster also contains several former Bengals, including C.J. and Carl Lawson, defensive end. Uzomah.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Brady will be facing the Steelers for the first time since signing with Tampa Bay in 2020. Brady has been mostly content with the Steelers but the seven-time Super Bowl champ was on the short side of a 17-10 score his last visit to Pittsburgh. Vance McDonald’s in 2018 was the last time that the Steelers beat the Buccaneers. Dramatic stiff-armPittsburgh won in front of a “Monday Night Football” audience.
Las Vegas Raiders – In recent years, the Steelers have been unable to match the Raiders. Las Vegas has won four of its five matches against Pittsburgh, which includes last year’s 26-17 win in Week 2. Derek Carr had an excellent day. He went 28 of 37 for 382yards with a pair touchdown passes. Johnson was a huge contributor to the Steelers’ success. He threw nine passes for an impressive 105 yards, which included a 41 yard reception.
Atlanta Falcons – The Falcons have acquired both veteran and rookie quarterbacks in the offseason, much like the Steelers. Atlanta signed Marcus Mariota, a former Titans starter. The Falcons then used a third round pick to select Desmond Ridder, a former Cincinnati quarterback. The Falcons used their first round pick to select Drake London. London is a 6-foot-5 receiver that the Steelers will be focusing on when they face off this season.
Buffalo Bills: The 2021 season was kicked off by Pittsburgh beating the Bills in Buffalo. They did this by holding Buffalo to just three field goals in red zone, while containing Josh Allen (who completed less than 60% of his throws). Watt recorded the first two of his NFL-record 22.5 sacks.
Carolina Panthers: Many believed that the Panthers would use No. Pickett, who eventually landed in Pittsburgh, was the 6th overall selection. Carolina chose to draft Matt Corral, an Ole Miss former quarterback. Sam Darnold is the Panthers’ starting quarterback, having defeated the Steelers in Week 16 of 2019.
Indianapolis Colts: Pittsburgh’s record against the Colts is 26-6. The Steelers won the AFC’s last playoff berth in Week 17. Former Falcon and league MVP Matt Ryan is the new quarterback for the Colts’ offense. Ryan went 0-3 against Pittsburgh while he was in Atlanta. Jonathan Taylor, who led NFL in rushing yards with 1,811 yards and 18 touchdown runs for the Colts in 2021, leads the offense.
Miami Dolphins: This match will be significant for Brian Flores (Steelers hired Flores after he was let go by the Dolphins) despite having posted back-to-back winning years as Miami’s head coaching coach. Fitzpatrick will also be playing in this game, having been traded from Miami to Pittsburgh in 2019 for the Steelers first round pick in 2020 Draft. Fitzpatrick, along with the rest of Steelers’ defense, will attempt to contain a Dolphins offense which will include the receiving duo Jaylen waddle and Tyreek hill.
Philadelphia Eagles: This year, the City of Brotherly Love has not been kind to the Steelers. Since 1965, Pittsburgh has not won in Philadelphia and is currently 0-2 in such matchups. This will be the Steelers’ first encounter against Eagles quarterback Jalenhurts, who was the Eagles’ starting quarterback during his rookie season. Javon Hargrave, an Eagles Pro Bowl Defensive tackle, will be playing in the game. He spent his first four NFL seasons with Steelers.
